Maury County Schools operates five middle schools serving grades 5–8 with a combined enrollment of 3,278 students, and the district currently ranks 84th out of 141 Tennessee districts. Academic outcomes vary widely across these schools. Spring Hill Middle School is the highest-ranked middle school, placing in the 59th percentile with 3 stars, the district's best math (42.1%) and ELA (39.9%) proficiency, and the lowest chronic absenteeism at 15.0%. Battle Creek Middle School follows at the 54th percentile and leads the district in science (46.3%) and social studies (51.6%), plus a standout Algebra I program where 71% of its 8th-grade test-takers are proficient. The clearest positive trend belongs to Whitthorne Middle School, which climbed from the 22nd to the 39th percentile over three years and improved in every subject from 2024–25 to 2025–26. At the other end, E. A. Cox Middle School is the district's most urgent concern, ranking in the 6th percentile with proficiency rates as low as 11.1% in ELA.

Chronic absenteeism tracks achievement closely: the stronger schools have the best attendance, with Spring Hill at 15.0% and Battle Creek at 17.0%, while Mt. Pleasant Middle Visual Perform. Arts School (24.5%) and E. A. Cox (23.4%) struggle most. Notably, the two lowest-performing schools spend the most per student — Mt. Pleasant at $14,389 and E. A. Even lower-ranked schools have bright spots, such as Mt. Pleasant's 5th-grade ELA near the state average and Whitthorne's 6th-grade social studies matching the state. Several schools also show a consistent decline in ELA proficiency from 5th to 8th grade, with Battle Creek dropping 24.6 points.

Overall, all five middle schools fall below state averages in every core subject, and the proficiency gap between the top and bottom schools reaches roughly 30 percentage points. For parents, attendance is the metric most closely tied to performance, and school choice makes a substantial difference within this district.
