Whitthorne Middle School

Whitthorne Middle School is a grades 5–8 school in Columbia, Tennessee, serving 951 students as part of Maury County Schools. The school currently ranks in the 39th percentile statewide (a 2-star rating), placing it in the lower-middle tier of Tennessee middle schools — but that ranking tells only part of the story. Whitthorne has been on a clear upward trajectory, jumping from the 15th percentile in 2022–2023 to its current position, a 24-percentile-point gain in just three years. Proficiency rates have nearly doubled in both math and social studies over that period. Social studies is a particular strength, with 43% of students scoring proficient, essentially matching the district average, and science also comes close to district levels.

Compared with nearby middle schools, Whitthorne stands out as the largest in the area — bigger than Spring Hill Middle, Battle Creek Middle, and Mt. Pleasant Middle Visual Perform. Arts School — while improving faster than several of them. Spring Hill and Battle Creek have both slipped in their rankings over the same period that Whitthorne has climbed. The school also outperforms higher-spending peers like E. A. Cox Middle School, which spends roughly $2,500 more per student yet posts significantly lower proficiency rates. There are still areas that need attention. English language arts remains the weakest subject, at 27% proficiency — 13 points below the state average — though 8th-grade ELA actually beats the district average. Chronic absenteeism is 19.3%, above the state rate but improved from a post-pandemic high of nearly 29%. Hispanic students have not shared in the school's overall gains, and that subgroup remains a concern. Still, the overall momentum is encouraging: if Whitthorne continues its current trajectory, this large, improving school could keep closing the gap with its higher-ranked neighbors.
