Lewis County Middle School spends about the same per student but far exceeds Mt. Pleasant in math, science, and social studies, which raises questions about how effectively resources are being used.

There are some bright spots. Fifth graders arrive with relatively stronger skills — 5th grade ELA proficiency (41%) is above the district and close to the state average — and 8th grade social studies proficiency (47.3%) nearly matches the state. However, performance drops sharply after 5th grade, with 6th–8th grade proficiency rates in most subjects falling into the low 20s. Despite its identity as a visual and performing arts school, these arts offerings do not appear to be driving stronger core academic outcomes. Overall, Mt. Pleasant has real strengths to build on, but rising absenteeism and steep declines in the upper grades remain the defining challenges.
