Summary

Seneca High is a public high school in Seneca, SC, serving 1,051 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Oconee 01 school district. The school currently ranks 123rd out of 245 high schools in South Carolina, placing it in the middle of the pack among nearby schools.

Seneca High shows a clear split in academic strengths and weaknesses. The school excels in English, with English 1 proficiency (71%) exceeding both district and state averages, and English 2 scores consistently strong. However, Algebra 1 proficiency is a significant concern—only 58% of students scored proficient in 2024-2025, compared to 75.6% district-wide and 74% statewide. This represents a persistent gap of roughly 16-18 percentage points over the past three years. When compared to nearby Walhalla High, which serves a similar student population just 10 miles away, Seneca trails significantly in math (58% vs. 71% proficiency) and overall state ranking (123rd vs. 59th). D. W. Daniel High also outperforms Seneca, ranking 50th in the state.

One of the most pressing challenges is chronic absenteeism, which affects 30.7% of Seneca students—well above the district average of 23.2% and state average of 22.3%. This likely contributes to the school's declining performance across all student subgroups over the past two years. On a positive note, graduation rates have steadily improved to 86%, matching the state average, and per-student spending of $13,752 is comparable to peer schools. The school serves a population with significant economic need, with nearly 70% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. While resources appear adequate, the combination of high absenteeism and math struggles suggests targeted interventions in attendance and algebra instruction could help close the gap with neighboring schools.

Open Quote This school is horrible. What people in SC feel is a good education falls very short. The biggest problem with this school is the administration, all the way to the district office in Walhalla. All I hear from kids are complaints as to how unfairly they are treated. The main principal is just a figure head and the entire community knows it. No one has any respect for any of the administration at all. I do not agree with minimum grades. And this district feels that no student should receive less than a 61. Where I come from you get what YOU EARN! There is a program called "seat recovery" the state says students need to be in class so many days a year. But the school says that if they miss more they can pay $20 and sit in a seat for so long and "recover" that time. Well I hate to tell the district but sitting in seat listening to an IPOD does not RECOVER class time that has been lost. The student is NOT doing the work or learning the lessons that were missed. As far as I have seen most of the administrators and some teachers do not deserve the degrees that they claim to have. Close Quote
