Summary

Northwood Middle in Taylors, SC, serves 823 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the highly ranked Greenville 01 school district, which ranks in the 85th percentile statewide.

Northwood is a strong, above-average middle school that consistently outperforms district and state averages in English Language Arts and math across most grade levels. Its most impressive strength is its work with Gifted and Talented students—Northwood ranked 1st out of 185 schools statewide for this group, a remarkable achievement. The school also does excellent work supporting English Language Learners, ranking in the top 20% statewide. In 8th-grade math, 68.2% of students scored proficient, compared to 50.5% for the district and 44.2% for the state, and the school has a 100% pass rate on the Algebra 1 End-of-Course exam. Per-student spending is higher than most nearby schools at $12,380, which may reflect investments in resources and specialized staff.

However, there are a few areas to note. Chronic absenteeism is a concern, with 23.2% of students chronically absent—higher than nearby Riverside Middle (15.5%) and Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle (18.6%). Additionally, 7th-grade math proficiency dipped to 47.6%, below the district average of 48.9%, which is a notable drop from the prior year. When compared to Riverside Middle, a nearby high-performer, Northwood trails in overall rankings and most subject areas, but its gifted program outshines Riverside's. For families with highly advanced learners, Northwood's exceptional gifted support makes it a compelling choice within a top-ranked district.

Open Quote The teaching is really serious and my boy loves being there ( 6th grade). There are different ways to teach there, and he is really happy, despite the amount of homework! Not all the work is on the computer and he is writing a lot too. Until now, we are very pleased. Close Quote

Open Quote This school needs to be shut down! The students run this school. There is a lot of fighting and bad language. I would not send my dog to this school. Close Quote
