Summary

Riverside Middle in Greer, SC, is a large public school serving 1,086 students in grades 6 through 8 as part of the highly ranked Greenville 01 school district.

Riverside Middle is a clear academic leader in its area, consistently earning 4 or 5 stars from SchoolDigger over the past decade. In the most recent school year, it ranked 36th out of 335 middle schools in South Carolina, placing it in the top 11% statewide. This puts it well ahead of nearby traditional public schools like Northwood Middle (ranked 56th), Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle (62nd), and Greer Middle (151st). Proficiency rates in English Language Arts range from 72% to 74.4% across grades, and math proficiency sits between 61.8% and 64.1%—both significantly above district and state averages. The school also posts a perfect 100% proficiency rate on the Algebra 1 End-of-Course exam, a remarkable achievement given its large student body. Additionally, Riverside has a notably lower chronic absenteeism rate (15.5%) compared to peers like Sevier Middle (25.4%) and Mauldin Middle (24.1%), suggesting strong student engagement.

Riverside achieves these results with efficient resource allocation, spending $11,761 per student—less than several high-performing neighbors including Beck International Academy ($12,773) and Northwood Middle ($12,380). While the nearby Langston Charter Middle outperforms Riverside on some metrics, Langston is a magnet school with a different admissions model and smaller, less diverse student population. For families seeking a comprehensive public middle school in the Greer area, Riverside stands out as the top traditional option, delivering exceptional academics, strong attendance, and a proven track record of success year after year.

Open Quote A poor little 13 year old attending Riverside Middle School was recently suspended (and her school record permanently blemished) because she decided to color her hair red with the full permission of her parents. The school abruptly suspended her, stating that red was a "non-human" hair color and therefore in violation of the dress code. Well, not only are there plenty of redheaded HUMAN students at Riverside to refute that, but several other students with multicolored hairdos have never been suspended! To quote the district's response, "rules are rules" however I haven't the foggiest idea which rule book they're reading from. I'm very disappointed with the leadership of this school.
