McNary High School is the only comprehensive high school in Keizer, Oregon, a city of roughly 40,000 next to Salem, and it serves grades 9–12 with 1,995 students — the third-largest campus in Salem-Keizer School District 24J. In 2025–26 it ranked #165 of 271 Oregon high schools (39th percentile, 2 stars), above the 26th percentile of its own district but below the state midpoint.

At 11th grade, McNary students beat district averages in all three tested subjects: 43.3% proficient in English language arts (district 36.8%, state 46%), 17.3% in math (district 15.3%, state 22.9%), and 27.7% in science (district 25.1%, state 33.8%). Among the six comprehensive Salem-Keizer high schools, that places McNary 2nd in ELA, 3rd in math, and 3rd in science — ahead of Sprague High School in ELA and behind West Salem High School and South Salem High School. Graduation looks strong on paper at 84.5%, above both district and state, but it has fallen 11.7 points in four years, and chronic absenteeism stands at 48.5% — still the second-lowest rate among those six schools.

Our school is poor and has really crappy standards for graduation. There are too many meetings for teachers and it is often hard to get help from a teacher before or after school because they are in meetings so much. Money is being spent for things that are not needed such as a turf field rather than new computers or books. Teachers are pressured to give students passing grades even if the student doesn't deserve or earn it. The school is structure itself is very depressing. We do have a very good swim team and many of the teachers are very good teachers, but there are many bad ones also. The student body itself is very good. There is very little bullying outside of the Mexican gangs we have at our school. We, however, are very unprepared to handle a school shooting, as a loaded pistol was found in the mens locker room a few months ago and very few people knew about it until the next day. Close Quote
