Summary

Woodlawn Elementary School is a public elementary school in Portland, Oregon, serving 299 students in grades PK-5. It is part of the Portland School District 1J, which is ranked 13th out of 140 districts in the state and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Woodlawn Elementary has shown steady improvement in its statewide ranking, moving from the bottom 30% of Oregon elementary schools in 2014-2015 to the top 25% in 2024-2025. The school's performance on the OSAS (Oregon Statewide Assessment System) tests is generally above the state average, particularly in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Woodlawn's 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students outperform the district and state averages in both ELA and Math proficiency. The school's performance is especially strong for certain student subgroups, such as White students and Gifted and Talented students, who rank among the top 10% and top 6% of Oregon elementary schools, respectively.

However, Woodlawn Elementary has experienced relatively high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 34.3% to 38.1% over the past few years, which is higher than the district and state averages. Addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism could be an area of focus for the school and district to improve student engagement and academic outcomes. Compared to nearby schools, Woodlawn's performance is generally on par with or slightly better than schools like Sabin Elementary and Chief Joseph Elementary, but lags behind higher-performing schools like Alameda Elementary, which consistently ranks among the top 10 elementary schools in Oregon.

Open Quote The Woodlawn staff lost track of a third grader last week (10-8-14) who ended up walking along the freeway. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers and parents are great. Unfortunately, PPS has placed a broken principal here. She was already ousted from Hayworth school and they think they can get away with putting her at Woodlawn because the community is too poor to complain. If we could get a principal with experience in running impoverished schools with as much racial and economic diversity as Woodlawn has - the school could be amazing. Close Quote
