Summary

Ockley Green Middle School is a public middle school in Portland, Oregon, serving 428 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Portland School District 1J, which is ranked 13th out of 140 districts in the state.

Despite being in a high-performing district, Ockley Green Middle School has consistently underperformed compared to the district and state averages in standardized test scores for English Language Arts and Mathematics, with proficiency rates around 30-40%. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 34.3% to 44.1% in recent years, significantly higher than the state average. When compared to other middle schools in the district, such as West Sylvan, Gray, and Beaumont Middle Schools, Ockley Green lags behind in academic achievement and overall school rankings.

Despite having a higher spending per student ($21,836 in 2022-2023) compared to the district average, the academic outcomes at Ockley Green Middle School have not improved, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution to the school's challenges. The school also faces significant performance gaps between different student subgroups, with African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students performing in the bottom 20-25% of Oregon middle schools in these categories. Addressing these issues will require a comprehensive approach that goes beyond just increasing funding, and may involve examining instructional practices, school climate, and targeted support for struggling student populations.

Open Quote We love Ockley Green! The K-8 program there is growing; parents are finding ways to become more involved and teachers consistently amaze us with their ability to promote diversity, art, music and technology through everyday learning. It shows in the way they teach, and in the extra hours they put in that they care very much for our children and their education. At first we were nervous about sending our "baby" to a school with 6th to 8th graders in it, but all you have to do is walk through the halls to see that the "big kids" treat the "little kids" with such great love and respect - it's like one big family.

Ockley Green is a great school, but it's not without it's challenges. The best advantage we have is a great group of dedicated parents, ready to work hard to support our teachers and make Ockley Green the best school in North Portland! Close Quote

Open Quote I am a Kindergarten parent at Ockley Green, and I am so happy with my experience here! The class sizes are small, the teachers are great, and the community is very supportive. It's still in transition from it's old role as a middle school to a magnet K-8, but it is on it's way up. If you're looking to make a school choice in Portland Public Schools, definitely check it out! Close Quote
