Salem-Keizer School District 24J includes eight high schools serving about 12,703 students: six comprehensive high schools (grades 9–12), one alternative school (grades 7–12), and one small early-college program. The district itself ranks 105th of 141 Oregon districts, at the 26th percentile with 1 star, so the district-level context is relatively low-performing.

Early College High School is the standout: ranked 1st of 271 statewide (100th percentile, 5 stars), a 100.0% graduation rate, chronic absenteeism of 13.2%, and proficiency of 89.7% in ELA, 74.4% in math, and 82.1% in science — though with only 193 students and no reported free/reduced-lunch rate, it is not directly comparable to the rest. Among comprehensive schools, West Salem High School leads: 132nd of 271 (51st percentile, 3 stars), a 94.4% graduation rate, the lowest chronic absenteeism (41.8%), and the best ELA (46.3%) and math (24.4%) results of the six. South Salem High School posts the strongest science (34.2%), McNary High School is competitive in ELA (43.3%), and Sprague High School has a 93.3% graduation rate but only 12.0% math proficiency.

Chronic absenteeism is the district's most pervasive issue: all six comprehensive schools exceed the state's 33.5%, and five of six also exceed the district's 43.1%. Math is the weakest subject — comprehensive schools average about 15.1%, versus 15.3% district and 22.9% state. North Salem High School ranks lowest among comprehensive schools (247th of 271, 9th percentile, 0 stars) with ELA 24.8%, math 8.2%, and science 13.8%, while McKay High School, the largest at 2,380 students, has the highest comprehensive chronic absenteeism (65.6%). Roberts High School, an alternative school, has a 17.1% graduation rate, absenteeism of 78.0%, and 11th-grade ELA and math reported as under 5%; its reported free/reduced-lunch figure of 120.78% is a data anomaly. Notably, the comprehensive schools have very similar free/reduced-lunch rates, around 89%, yet outcomes vary widely, and spending levels do not track results.
