Academically, the profile is split. Sixth grade math is a genuine bright spot: 64.3% proficient in 2025–26, above the state's 56.2% and higher than every nearby school with reported data, including Brookfield Middle School (53.3%), Mathews Junior High School (58.3%), Austintown Middle School (59.9%), Hubbard Middle School (51.1%), and Niles Middle School (46.9%). Fifth grade lags well behind the state in math (36.6% vs. 59.1%), ELA (50.6% vs. 70.4%), and science (49.4% vs. 62.7%), and sixth grade ELA (42.9%) trails the state's 56.0% and most nearby schools. Girard Intermediate Middle School, the only nearby school with the same 4–6 grade span, outperforms William S Guy Middle School in every overlapping subject except 6th grade math.

The strongest improvement story is attendance. Chronic absenteeism fell from 44.7% in 2021–22 to 23.9% in 2025–26, a 20.8-point drop, and stayed below the Youngstown City district rate each year (36.3% in 2025–26). It is now lower than Brookfield Middle School (27.4%), Niles Middle School (38.7%), and Girard Junior High School (25.4%), and far lower than Chaney Middle (72.6%) and East Middle at PRBerry (73.6%). The latest overall accountability ranking is 28th percentile, 1 star (2022–23), down from a 2012–13 high of 67th percentile. Subgroup rankings are uneven: special education students rank 33rd percentile (2 stars) and low-income students 23rd percentile, while gifted and talented students rank 12th, 7th, and 2nd percentile in recent years. The student-teacher ratio improved from 34.0 to 19.5, and per-student spending was $9,964 in 2018–19.
