Summary

Pleasant High School is a 347-student public high school serving grades 9–12 in Marion, Ohio, and is the high school of the Pleasant Local district, located in an area with several nearby district high schools.

The school’s biggest story is a two-year academic slide from a high point. In 2025–26 it ranked 416th of 795 Ohio high schools (48th percentile, 2 stars), down from 175th of 864 (80th percentile, 4 stars) in 2023–24. The state ranking pool shrank, so the raw rank change overstates the drop, but the 32-percentile-point decline is real. At the same time, attendance and completion are strong: 14.3% chronic absenteeism is the lowest in the comparison group, and the 97.8% graduation rate is near the top locally. The school is better than most nearby schools at keeping students in class and getting them to finish; the academic results are what has slipped. For example, North Union High School is similar in size and poverty and ranks close by, yet Pleasant’s chronic absenteeism is 14.3% versus 26.5%, and Pleasant does much better in Government and Geometry while losing badly in Biology. Harding High School ranks much lower (21st percentile) with 42.4% chronic absenteeism, and Pleasant outperforms it on every reported metric.

The decline is concentrated, not school-wide. English II (76.1) and American Government (82.8) remain double-digit points above state, but Biology has fallen 24.3 points since 2023–24 and American History 15.2 points, both now below state average. Algebra I and Geometry surged in 2023–24 and have since given back about half their gains. Low-income students are the weakest measured group at the 28th percentile, 20 points below the school overall. Buckeye Valley Local High School ranks at the 89th percentile and beats Pleasant in all six tested subjects, though Pleasant has better attendance (14.3% versus 19.9%). Overall, Pleasant looks like a school with strong attendance and graduation foundations and a targeted instructional problem in science, social studies, and math, especially for low-income students.
