Hiland High School is a grades 7–12 school of 395 students in the village of Millersburg in Holmes County, Ohio, and serves as the flagship building of the East Holmes Local district. Statewide, it ranks 65th of 795 Ohio high schools — the 92nd percentile with a 5-star rating — and it has earned 5 stars in each of the last five reported school years, climbing from the 76th percentile a decade ago, roughly a 16-percentile-point improvement. That gain is real rather than a quirk of a shrinking comparison pool, since the number of ranked Ohio high schools grew from 773 to 867 over the same period. Hiland also sits modestly ahead of its own district, which ranks 88th of 773 (89th percentile, 4 stars).
In end-of-course testing, Hiland beats the state in every subject — American Government 95.8%, American History 91.2%, Algebra I 88.9%, Biology 82.4%, English II 81.2%, and Geometry 66.7%, all well above state averages. Only one nearby school performs at the same level: Garaway High School, 7.9 miles away, which shares Hiland's 7–12 grade span, similar enrollment (441 vs. 395), and near-identical student-teacher ratios. Two things are worth watching. Chronic absenteeism is 14.8% — third-lowest regionally, but consistently above the district's 10.5% and well above Garaway's 9.3%. And seventh- and eighth-grade results in Math 7, Math 8, Science 8, and ELA 7 all fall below the district's own figures for those grades, so the school's reputation rests largely on high school performance. On the positive side, the graduation rate reached 100.0% most recently, and students from low-income families ranked in the 97th percentile statewide in 2024–25 — close to best-in-class.
