Summary

Winesburg Elementary School is a small public school at 2165 US Route 62 in Winesburg, Ohio, serving 148 students in grades K–6 as part of the East Holmes Local district in a rural, low-poverty part of Holmes County. It currently ranks 299th of 1,560 Ohio elementary schools (81st percentile, 4 stars), making it the third-highest-ranked of the six elementaries in its district, behind Chestnut Ridge Elementary School and Walnut Creek Elementary School.

Math is the school's standout strength. In 2025-26, math proficiency at every tested grade was far above the state — 94.7% in 5th grade, for example, versus 59.1% statewide — and the prior year saw 100% proficiency in 3rd and 4th grade math. The school also does exceptionally well by its English Language Learners, who have ranked in the top 5–7% of Ohio schools for three straight years (94th percentile in 2025-26). Class sizes are modest, and the student-teacher ratio has improved to 14.9, better than most nearby schools.

There are three specific areas worth asking about. Sixth-grade English language arts is the only subject where the school falls below the state, at 47.8% versus 56.0% — a gap that has persisted for four years and trails every nearby school. Fifth-grade science has slipped for three years (72.0% → 72.7% → 63.2%) and now sits just above the state but 17 points below the district. And chronic absenteeism jumped to 27.9% in 2025-26, more than double the district rate and far above neighbors such as Chestnut Ridge (4.2%) and Walnut Creek (3.8%), after several years of low rates. That spike is best treated as a question to raise rather than a settled trend.
