Summary

Bluffton High School is a 9–12 public school with 420 students in the Bluffton Exempted Village district, located in the small northwest Ohio town of Bluffton, where it serves one of the most affluent student bodies in its region — about 12.38% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Statewide, Bluffton High School ranks 135th of 795 Ohio high schools (83rd percentile, 4 stars), and it beats the Ohio average in all six tested subjects, averaging 80.5% proficiency against the state's 63.2%. Its district ranks even higher — 49th of 773 (94th percentile, 5 stars), the strongest district in its comparison group.

Compared with nearby schools, the results are uneven rather than uniformly strong. Bluffton ranks 1st of 10 locally in English II (88.6%) and 3rd in both Biology and Geometry, but 7th in American Government and 9th in American History — behind Allen East High School and Ada High School, schools it out-performs almost everywhere else. Biology has held steady near 83% for four straight years, English II jumped from 73.2% to the high 80s and stayed there, and Algebra I has climbed 14 points in four years. The 95.9% graduation rate is healthy but ranks 8th of 10 locally, with Liberty-Benton High School, Ada and Pandora-Gilboa High School all at 100%.

Two developments are worth watching. The school's state rank has drifted from the 94th percentile in 2017–18 to the 83rd in 2025–26, and chronic absenteeism nearly doubled to 11.3% — roughly twice its own district's 6.7% rate and the widest school-versus-district gap in the comparison group. Internally, low-income students trail the school average by 14–20 percentile points, a gap that has not closed, and male students have gone from ranking above female students in 2023–24 to 14 percentile points behind them. A single-year special-education swing should be read as small-sample noise. Notably, Bluffton achieves these results at roughly median per-student spending.
