That ranking is the school's second-lowest in a decade and continues a slow slide: Lima West sat around the 20th–22nd percentile from 2018-19 through 2020-21 and has drifted down since. On the 2025-2026 state tests, about 10% of 8th graders were proficient in math and about 26% of 7th graders in English language arts, compared with roughly 60% to 88% at nearby Columbus Grove Middle School, Bath Middle School, Shawnee Middle School, and Elida Middle School. The most striking difference is attendance: 53.8% of Lima West students are chronically absent, versus 5% to 20% at those neighboring schools — and the school has stayed above 50% for five straight years. Students arrive already behind: Lima North Middle School, which feeds Lima West and serves grades 5–6 in the same district, also has roughly 50% chronic absenteeism and similarly low test results.

Lima West's Algebra I proficiency (44.4%) beats its own district (31.5%) for the fourth year running, though it remains below the state — likely a small, selected group of accelerated students rather than a school-wide result. Eighth-grade math and English language arts have also edged up from very low starting points. Class sizes here are the smallest in the comparison group, so staffing levels and per-student spending do not appear to be the obvious constraint. Note that free/reduced-price lunch data are suppressed, spending figures date to 2018-19, and small subgroup sizes make single-year swings directional.
