Summary

Shawnee Middle School sits at 3235 Zurmehly Rd on the southwest side of Lima, Ohio, serves grades 4 through 8, and enrolls 712 students — by a wide margin the largest middle school among its nearby peers. In 2025-26 it ranked 265th of 1,046 Ohio middle schools (75th percentile) and earned 4 stars, a rating it has held every year on record from 2015-16 through 2025-26. It beat the Ohio state proficiency rate in every tested subject and grade, and it is the middle-level building for Shawnee Local, with results nearly identical to the district's.

Locally, Shawnee Middle School is strong but no longer the strongest. Among ten nearby middle schools it places fourth, behind Bath Middle School, Spencerville Middle School and Wapakoneta Middle School. Bath edges Shawnee in nearly every comparable 2025-26 measure — 8th-grade science 89.7 vs. 77.1, 7th-grade ELA 86.3 vs. 80.5 — despite a higher free/reduced-lunch share and lower per-student spending. Shawnee's statewide percentile has drifted from 90th (2015-16) to 75th (2025-26), and 5th-grade math has fallen from 88.6 to 77.8. Against the Lima City schools, though, the gap is enormous: 80.5% proficient in 7th-grade ELA versus 25.6% at Lima West Middle School and 18.7% at Lima North Middle School in 6th grade.

A few soft spots are worth watching. Sixth grade is consistently the weakest — lowest ELA in each of the last three years — while 8th grade is the strength. Chronic absenteeism improved to 15.3% in 2025-26 but has run above the district's own rate in four of the last five years. The free/reduced-lunch share climbed from 29.85% to 40.17% in three years, and low-income students scored at the 58th percentile in 2025-26, down from 82nd in 2023-24. Shawnee's 100% Algebra I proficiency for four straight years is genuine, but several neighboring schools also report 100%.

The teachers are amazing with the students .They are working with them so they do not fail the class .They work hard on the lessons so they do not ask so many questions .They help with the reviews of a test so they will know what to review for the test that will come up .The office is helping so much with giving the students masks and use to give water bottles .The students are honest when they have to go on the wall .The students are nice to each other .They work together if they need to help on assignments they did not know .They talk to each other every day .
