Summary

Fairwood Alternative Elementary School is a PK–6 school at 726 Fairwood Ave on Columbus's near east side (43205), serving 202 students as part of Columbus City Schools District, a district ranked in the bottom 12% of Ohio.

The school has spent a decade in the bottom 13% of Ohio elementary schools, but 2025–26 is its best percentile in that window (13th), up from 4th in 2023–24. The biggest change is attendance: chronic absenteeism fell 12.1 points in one year, from 66.1% to 54.0%, now essentially even with the district after years of running 7–14 points above it. Achievement has followed — math proficiency nearly tripled (10.1% to 28.6%) and English language arts more than doubled (14.6% to 35.1%) over four years, closing most of the gap with the district. Grade 4 is a bright spot, at or above district averages in both math and ELA. Two weaknesses remain: 5th-grade science sits 28.7 points below the district, and 3rd-grade results lag.

Compared with nearby schools, Fairwood is now the second-strongest Columbus City elementary in its immediate cluster, ahead of Moler Elementary School, Eastgate Elementary School, Ohio Avenue Elementary School, and Livingston Elementary School in most subjects, with Berwick Alternative K-8 School the benchmark clearly ahead. Nearby charters — Capital Collegiate Preparatory Academy, 0.38 miles away, and A+ Arts Academy — post far higher absenteeism. Bexley's Montrose Elementary School and Cassingham Elementary School, 1.2 and 1.5 miles away, sit at the 94th and 92nd percentiles, a gap not explained by money or class size, since Fairwood's 12.6:1 student-teacher ratio is lower than both. The gains are real but rest on a few students per grade, so the question is whether they hold as new classes arrive.
