It is rated 1 star for 2025–2026 with a statewide rank of 709th of 795 (11th percentile); the district ranks 683rd of 773 (12th percentile). South's statewide rank has stayed low for a decade, ranging from the 6th percentile in 2015–2016 to a high of 19th percentile in 2018–2019, and it has received 1 star in every recent year except 2015–2016, when it received 0 stars.

There is real positive news on two fronts. The graduation rate rose to 80.1% in 2025–2026 from 65.7% in 2023–2024, now close to the district's 81.5%. Chronic absenteeism is 79.1% — improved from 88.2% in 2021–2022 but still well above the district's 53.8%. The student–teacher ratio is 15:1. Per-student spending was $10,559 in 2018–2019, lower than same-district peers such as East High School, Marion-Franklin High School, and Fort Hayes Arts and Academic High School, though that figure is dated.
