Yarbro Elementary is a public school in Lovington, New Mexico, serving roughly 474 fourth- and fifth-graders as part of Lovington Municipal Schools, in a southeastern New Mexico community where 100% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Its student–teacher ratio of 15.1 in 2024–2025 is more favorable than that of nearby Mills Elementary (18.1), Stone Elementary (18.8), and College Lane Elementary (17.3), so class size does not appear to be the obvious source of the school's challenges.

Academically, Yarbro ranked 309th out of 346 New Mexico elementary schools in 2025–2026 — the 11th percentile, with 1 star out of 5. That continues a long decline: the school was at the 66th percentile in 2017–2018 (3 stars), the 45th percentile in 2022–2023, the 16th percentile in 2024–2025, and the 11th percentile now. In 2025–2026, 33.33% of students were proficient in language arts (compared with 39.89% in the district and 43.34% statewide) and 16.82% in math (compared with 22.38% in the district and 25.54% statewide). Math also fell behind the state over time: in 2022–2023 Yarbro's math proficiency was 25%, slightly above the state's 24%, but it is now well below.

The sharpest concern is 5th grade, where 25.11% of students were proficient in language arts (state 41.98%), 14.35% in math (state 33.85%), and 19.65% in science (state 31.97%) — far below the school's own 4th grade (42.13% language arts, 19.44% math) and below every nearby Hobbs comparison school in every subject reviewed. Nearly every major student group, including boys, girls, and students from low-income families, ranks in the bottom 10% of the state, pointing to a broad, school-wide pattern rather than an isolated one. Because Yarbro is the only school in the data serving 5th grade, these weak upper-grade results are effectively a district-wide priority as well as a school-level one.
