Summary:

Hobbs, New Mexico has 18 schools — 13 elementary, 3 middle, and 2 high — enrolling about 9,357 students combined. Nearly all belong to Hobbs Municipal Schools, which ranks 68th of 87 districts statewide (22nd percentile, 1 star). The one exception is Lae County Corrections, a 7-student high school in the Nm Corrections district. School sizes vary widely, from those 7 students to 2,312 at Hobbs High, with elementary enrollment spanning 155 at Booker T. Washington Elementary to 532 at College Lane Elementary.

Several schools stand out. Mills Elementary is the strongest overall, ranking 69th percentile with 3 stars in 2025-2026 while posting 53.62% proficiency in Language Arts and 40.10% in Math. Taylor Elementary has the highest elementary Language Arts score (55.21%), Coronado Elementary the highest elementary math (40.84%, including 59.7% in 5th-grade math), and Sanger Elementary 50% in Language Arts and 36.14% in Math. For older students, Houston Middle School leads the middle schools, and Hobbs High graduates 87.4% of students versus the state's 80.6%.

Weaker spots are concentrated. All three middle schools fall below district and state averages: Heizer Middle School has the lowest middle Language Arts score (30.77%) and the highest free/reduced lunch rate (76.57%), while Highland Middle School reports just 7.69% in 8th-grade math. Will Rogers Elementary has the lowest Language Arts (26.21%) and Booker T. Washington Elementary the lowest reported math (11.67%). Science is the district's biggest weakness — no Hobbs school reached the state average. Neither poverty nor class size clearly predicts results: Mills has a high student-teacher ratio of 18.1 with strong scores, while Booker T. Washington has the lowest ratio (12.0) and the lowest math.
