Lovington High

Lovington High is a comprehensive public high school serving grades 9–12 with 746 students in Lovington, a community in Lea County in southeastern New Mexico, and it is by far the largest school in Lovington Municipal Schools — roughly seven times the size of the district's only other high school, New Hope Alternative High (104 students). Nearly every student at Lovington High is economically disadvantaged: 99.87% qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–2025, essentially unchanged from the two prior years.

Compared with nearby schools, the school's clearest strength is getting students to graduation. It graduated 88.3% of its students in 2024–2025, above the district rate of 83.8% and the state rate of 80.6%, while New Hope Alternative High graduated 49.1% — consistent with a smaller alternative setting serving students who struggled in a comprehensive high school. Lovington High also reports 15.9 students per teacher versus 24.4 at New Hope, a considerable staffing advantage. The third nearby school, Lae County Corrections, enrolls 7 students in a corrections setting and reports no rank, test, or graduation data, so it offers no basis for academic comparison.

Test scores are the weak spot. In 2025–2026, 11th graders trailed the state in every subject reported: 31.35% proficient in language arts (state 36.78%), 7.57% in math (state 12.72%), and 21.62% in science (state 34.02%). The school ranked 98th of 132 ranked New Mexico high schools (26th percentile, 1 star), down from the 44th percentile two years earlier, and male students fell from the 51st percentile to the 13th over that span. One more favorable reading exists: the school's low-income students ranked in the 46th percentile — about 20 points above the school overall — suggesting it performs closer to par when matched against schools serving similar populations.
