Summary

Traphill Elementary School is a small, rural K-5 school in Traphill, North Carolina, serving 73 students as part of Wilkes County Schools. The school serves a deeply high-poverty student population — about 96% qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024-25 — yet it benefits from strong per-pupil spending and the lowest student-teacher ratio in the area at 10.8 to 1. In the 2025-26 school year, Traphill ranked 626th out of 1,492 North Carolina elementary schools (58th percentile), earning 3 stars on SchoolDigger and rebounding from a 42nd-percentile ranking the year before.

Academically, the school's clearest strength is 5th-grade science. Traphill posted a 90.9% proficiency rate, far above the Wilkes County Schools average of 69.3%, the state average of 67.7%, and every nearby elementary school, including C B Eller Elementary School at 85.7%. That science edge has held up consistently across multiple school years. Math is also broadly competitive: 3rd and 5th graders beat district and state averages on the most recent EOG tests, with 3rd-grade math at 75% proficiency.

Reading is the school's most consistent weakness, particularly in the upper elementary grades. Fifth-grade reading proficiency was 45.5%, well below the district rate of 56.0%, and 4th-grade reading also trailed both district and state averages. The recent jump in statewide ranking should be read with caution; with only 73 students, a tested grade cohort may be very small, so one or two students crossing the proficiency line can swing a score significantly. Attendance is a bright spot, with a chronic absenteeism rate of 16.4% in 2024-25 — far better than the statewide 24.2%. Traphill's standout science and math results show what this high-poverty, well-supported school can accomplish, but lifting literacy in the upper grades remains its greatest challenge.

Open Quote I love Traphill! The principal is awesome. He takes pride in his school and students. He takes time and looks at each and every students report card and writes words of pride and encouragement. My kids all excelled at this school and we came from a school four times the size of Traphill. I feel I can say so because I have 4 kids who attend. Close Quote
