Summary

Ronda-Clingman Elementary School serves 318 students in grades PK–5 in the rural town of Ronda, NC, as part of Wilkes County Schools, and nearly all of its students (99%) are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

Ronda-Clingman has seen a striking shift in its statewide ranking over the past few years. In 2021-22, the school ranked in the top 10% of North Carolina elementary schools with a 4-star rating. By 2025-26, it had fallen to the 41st percentile (2 stars), though that does represent a slight improvement over the prior year. The biggest bright spot is chronic absenteeism, which dropped from 23.2% to 13.4% in one year — well below the district rate of 16.9% and roughly half the statewide rate. That figure is also better than nearby C C Wright Elementary School (24.6%), West Yadkin Elementary (21.8%), and Jonesville Elementary (18.4%). Academic performance is uneven: 3rd grade math (69.7% proficient) and 5th grade reading (59.6%) are above state averages, and 5th grade science is right at the state average. However, the current 4th grade class is struggling significantly, with reading and math proficiency roughly 20 points below the state average. This appears to be a cohort effect — this same group of students posted very low scores as 3rd graders the year before — rather than a schoolwide issue.

Compared with nearby schools, Ronda-Clingman sits in the middle of the pack, ranking 41st statewide versus 60th at Roaring River Elementary School and 58th at Traphill Elementary School. Subgroup data shows the school serves its low-income students relatively well (53rd percentile), but outcomes for male students (31st percentile) and White students (15th percentile) lag notably. The school’s per-pupil spending of $9,687 (2018-19 data) is modest given its high poverty rate, yet several scores remain competitive with state averages — suggesting the challenge is consistency, not capacity.
