Summary

Millbrook Elementary is a public magnet elementary school in Raleigh, North Carolina, serving 506 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Wake County Schools district, which is ranked 60th out of 242 districts in the state.

Academically, Millbrook Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of North Carolina elementary schools over the past 10 years. The school's performance on state standardized tests is significantly below the Wake County and North Carolina averages across all grade levels and subject areas, particularly in reading. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 25% of 3rd graders and 42.4% of 5th graders at Millbrook were proficient or better in reading, compared to 57.2% and 62% for Wake County, respectively.

Millbrook Elementary's academic challenges are further highlighted by its comparison to nearby schools, such as Lynn Road Elementary, Joyner Elementary, and North Ridge Elementary, which consistently outperform Millbrook on state assessments. The school's high percentage of students from low-income families, ranging from 49.9% to 80.15% over the past few years, may contribute to these academic disparities and suggest a need for targeted interventions and additional resources to support student success.

Open Quote Test scores do NOT tell the story here. MEMS is a warm, loving, creative school. The teachers are exceptional educators and very caring people. It feels like a family. Children become invested in their education through the use of the IB inquiry model. Students get excited about learning because they are researching answers to their own questions. Every staff member at MEMS takes time to know and work with kids. It is not unusual to see the principal, custodian or office staff reading with a student or just simply checking in. We were grateful to call MEMS home for 12 years. Close Quote
