Summary

Fuquay-Varina High in Fuquay-Varina, NC, is a large traditional public high school serving 1,858 students in grades 9–12 as part of Wake County Schools, one of North Carolina's strongest districts. The school currently ranks 198th out of 662 high schools statewide (70th percentile) with a 4-star rating, a meaningful jump from the prior-year rank of 250th. Amid nearby comprehensive Wake County schools, Fuquay-Varina sits just behind Apex Friendship High and Holly Springs High, roughly level with Apex High, and clearly ahead of Willow Spring High and Middle Creek High. It also outpaces geographically close schools in lower-performing districts, such as Harnett Central High and Southern Wake Academy.

Academically, Fuquay-Varina exceeds both Wake County and state averages in Biology (74.7%), English II (77.6%), and Math III (83.3%), with Math III a true strength compared with nearby schools. Its clearest academic weakness is Math I, where only 35.1% of students score proficient — below district and state levels and far behind Holly Springs High (65.2%) and Apex Friendship High (59.5%). The graduation rate, meanwhile, is a bright spot at 93.9%, above the district (91.3%) and state (88.8%) rates. Biology scores also jumped more than 20 points in a single year, further evidence of the school's upward momentum.

Fuquay-Varina's main non-academic challenge is attendance: its chronic absenteeism rate of 24.1% sits above the Wake County average of 20.5% and roughly ten points higher than Apex Friendship High and Holly Springs High. The school has improved in this area since 2021-2022, and continued gains could meaningfully boost achievement. The school has also posted strong results for economically disadvantaged students in the most recent year, while English learner performance has slipped and may need extra attention. Overall, Fuquay-Varina looks like a solid, improving high school with strong graduation and upper-level math outcomes; if it can shore up foundational math and attendance, it has a realistic path to the top tier of Wake County's comprehensive high schools.

Open Quote My student has been very happy at Fuquay Varina High School. She has been very successful due in part to the school's working lunch, where she can get help on any of the assignments she is having trouble with. We are both excited about the new principal coming in. My son knew him when we were at Green Hope and he connected with the kids in fun way, but was still the authority. Go, Tigers!! Close Quote
