Located in Walnut Cove, NC, South Stokes High School is a traditional public school serving 538 students in grades 9–12 as part of Stokes County Schools. The school's statewide performance has been falling for years, and the current 2025–2026 ranking places it 502nd out of 662 North Carolina high schools—at the 24th percentile with a 1-star rating. South Stokes now ranks as the lowest traditional high school in the county, trailing West Stokes High School, North Stokes High School, and Stokes Early College High School, while sitting just ahead of Stokes County Academy, an alternative-style school. The sharpest one-year decline came between 2024–2025 and 2025–2026, when the school dropped 125 ranking spots.

Academically, South Stokes lags behind its district and the state in every End-of-Course subject—Biology, English II, Math I, and Math III. Only 13.6% of students are chronically absent—far below the state's 24.2% rate and better than many nearby schools, including Mount Tabor High School (43.2%) and Carver High (60.9%). Students are clearly coming to school; the challenge is translating that into stronger learning. Graduation rates sit at 87.4%, below West Stokes High School's 93.9% and the state average of 88.8%. For a school where students consistently show up, the recent academic slide is not inevitable—but parents should look closely at the school's academic support and instructional programs before making enrollment decisions.

The teachers here are so wonderful and helpful! I have never had better grades or better understanding in my studies than when I started attending South Stokes High. Some people say West Stokes is better but I definitely beg to differ! I am a Proud South Stokes Saura and hope to stay that way to the end!
