Summary

North Forsyth Magnet High is a public high school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, serving about 1,084 students in grades 9–12 as part of the Winston Salem / Forsyth County Schools district. The school faces steep economic challenges: 99.7% of its students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. It currently ranks 602nd out of 662 North Carolina high schools — the 9th percentile — well below its district's mid-level state standing. Only 77.6% of students graduate, and 51.5% were chronically absent last year, more than twice the state average.

Academically, North Forsyth trails the district and state on every End-of-Course exam. Just 16.7% of students are proficient in Math I, and 25.8% in Biology, compared with state rates of 42.1% and 58.5%. What is most telling is that high poverty does not necessarily produce these results: J F Kennedy High, roughly five miles away and serving a nearly identical share of low-income students (99.1%), posts a 90.0% graduation rate, far lower chronic absenteeism (35.8%), and much stronger math proficiency (43.1% in Math I). Mount Tabor High School, also with near-universal free-lunch enrollment, similarly outperforms North Forsyth on most measures. Even the school's own low-income students rank in the 7th percentile when compared with low-income students at other North Carolina schools, suggesting the results cannot be explained by demographics alone.

There are some encouraging signs. Chronic absenteeism has fallen sharply from 80.2% in 2021-2022 to 51.5% now, and English II proficiency has climbed from 26.7% to 39.1% in recent years. English Language Learner students have also moved from the 7th to the 31st percentile in statewide rankings. Still, the overall picture remains difficult: the graduation rate slipped recently even as district and state rates improved, and the magnet designation has not translated into mid-level or high performance. Families weighing options should ask pointed questions about math support, attendance outreach, and how the school plans to build on its early gains.

The Principal leads by managing and manages by crunching numbers. Teachers leaving during her tenure share commonality of rating her and the central office performance negatively on what seemed to be anonymous surveys. The central office allegedly baited teachers with sponsored, traceable surveys and/or illegally accessed controlled, neutral surveys to compile a "hit list."

In the past the District Superintendent has hired private detectives to monitor student and adult employee activity.

At least one assistant principal at the school was transferred to North Forsyth HS after demotion as a principal of another school. The one assistant and principal account for the majority of teacher evaluations reporting negatively on survey takers identified as reporting negatively on central office or site performance.
