Midway High is a mid-sized rural public high school in Newton Grove, NC, serving about 726 students in grades 9–12 as part of Sampson County Schools. In the 2025-26 SchoolDigger ranking, Midway placed 233rd of 662 North Carolina high schools (65th percentile, 3 stars), making it the strongest traditional, open-enrollment high school in its immediate area. It was a 4-star school before the pandemic and has held in the upper-middle range since. Nearby, Cape Fear High ranks #278, South Johnston High #414, Lakewood High #422, Hobbton High #483, Triton High #526, and Clinton High #548. The only higher-ranked nearby schools are Sampson Early College High (#36) and Harnett County Early College (#46). Both are small early-college programs, not traditional neighborhood high schools.

Midway serves an exceptionally high-poverty student body—about 99% qualify for free/reduced-price lunch—making its academic results all the more impressive. Math III is the biggest standout, coming in roughly 23 points above the state average. The graduation rate is also strong at 90.2%, above the district average of 87.0%.

Given these conditions, Midway is an unusually strong school for a high-poverty rural community. English Learner students are a particular bright spot, ranking in the 89th percentile statewide in 2025-26. The clearest area for improvement is special education, where outcomes remain persistently below the school's overall performance.
