Summary

Nash Everywhere Digital Academy (NEDA) is a public virtual school serving 259 students in grades 6–12 in Rocky Mount, NC, operating within Nash County Public Schools. The school currently holds a 1-star rating and ranks in the 13th percentile of North Carolina high schools, putting it well below most traditional schools in the area. NEDA's student population has shifted dramatically over the past few years: the share of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch rose from about 31% in 2022–23 to 74% in 2024–25, while the student-to-teacher ratio nearly doubled, meaning the school is now serving a much higher-need population with less staffing intensity.

The most urgent concern is mathematics. Only 6.7% of NEDA students scored proficient on the Math I end-of-course exam, compared with roughly 42% at both the district and state levels. Middle-school math scores are also well below state averages, suggesting students are arriving at high school without solid algebra foundations. The graduation rate is another serious red flag: it dropped from 84.2% to 69.0%, the lowest among nearby high schools with reported data. Chronic absenteeism affects about one-third of students (32.6%), above both the district and state rates, which is especially concerning for a virtual school where engagement is already harder to maintain.

There are some bright spots. NEDA's middle-school reading scores are close to or above district and state averages, and its English II scores, while below the state, are not as weak as its math results. However, the overall picture is sobering when compared with schools like Nash Early College High School and CITI High School, which serve higher-poverty populations yet rank in the 96th and 69th percentiles statewide. NEDA's closest comparison is Tar River Academy, another grades 6–12 school just over a mile away. NEDA outperforms Tar River on most tested subjects, but Tar River reports a much higher graduation rate of 88.0%. Overall, NEDA needs targeted support in mathematics, attendance and engagement, and credit completion to improve outcomes for its students.
