Summary

Rocky Mount Preparatory is an alternative K–12 school in Rocky Mount, NC, serving 854 students, nearly all of whom (97.7%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school is also its own district, Rocky Mount Preparatory, a structure typical of independent preparatory schools in North Carolina. It is the second-largest among nearby peer schools—larger than Wilson Preparatory Academy and Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School, but smaller than North East Carolina Prep. Parents should note the student–teacher ratio is 24.1, well above Wilson Preparatory Academy (17.6), North East Carolina Prep (13.8), and Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School (14.4), meaning larger class sizes and less individualized attention.

On North Carolina End-of-Grade tests, Rocky Mount Preparatory trails similar schools by a wide margin. In math, 27.1% of students in grades 3–8 scored proficient, compared with 63.2% at Wilson Preparatory Academy and 60.4% at North East Carolina Prep. Reading proficiency was 38.2%, versus 59.1% and 64.6% at those same schools. The most urgent concern is middle school math: only one in five 7th and 8th graders is proficient, while nearby schools reach 70–80%. Science results are also well below state averages. High school End-of-Course tests look different: 2025-26 Math I (68.8%) and Math III (72.3%) proficiency at Rocky Mount Preparatory exceeded both the state and Wilson Preparatory Academy. These scores, however, have been volatile—Math I jumped from 6.6% to 68.8%—so single-year results should be read cautiously.

Attendance is the biggest red flag. Chronic absenteeism reached 35.2% in 2024-25, more than triple the 2021-22 rate of 10.4% and well above the state's 24.2%. North East Carolina Prep, with a nearly identical poverty population, posts just 15.1%. The graduation rate, historically strong at 89–91%, fell to 81.3% in the most recent year—below the state (88.8%) and below North East Carolina Prep (92.2%) and Wilson Preparatory Academy (91.3%). Comparable schools show that high poverty does not have to mean low performance. The key areas for Rocky Mount Preparatory to address are absenteeism, middle school math, and the stability of its high school results.
