Rocky Mount High is a large public high school in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, serving roughly 1,023 students in grades 9–12 as part of Nash County Public Schools. Nearly all students (97.7%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, reflecting a very high-poverty community. Despite improvements in recent years, the school ranks 591st of 662 North Carolina high schools — an 11th-percentile, 1-star rating that places it well behind other traditional high schools in the area.

The academic gaps compared with nearby schools are substantial. On 2025–2026 state tests, only 16.4% of Rocky Mount High students were proficient in Math I, versus 34.3% at Northern Nash High and 62.6% at Nash Central High. Similar gaps exist in Biology, English II, and Math III, even though those neighboring schools serve nearly identical poverty levels. Chronic absenteeism is a major concern: about 39% of students are chronically absent, compared with roughly 23% at Northern Nash High and Nash Central High and 24% statewide. The good news is that the graduation rate has risen from roughly 77% to 84.9% in recent years, though it still trails the state average of 88.8%.

Rocky Mount High's English Learner program ranked in the 94th percentile statewide in 2025–2026 — 18th out of 289 schools — and its Gifted and Talented students ranked in the 80th percentile, up sharply from the previous year. These results show that pockets of excellence exist within the school and that stronger attendance, a sharper focus on math, and expanded support for low-income and special education students could help close the gap with nearby peer schools.
