Summary

EDGE Academy of Health Sciences is a small public high school in Rocky Mount, NC, that serves 75 students in grades 9–12 with a focus on health sciences. It belongs to Edgecombe County Public Schools, a district ranked in the bottom 13% of the state, yet the school itself ranks 113th of 662 high schools statewide — the 83rd percentile, earning 4 stars. That places it near the top of all traditional public high schools in the surrounding area, behind only Nash Early College High School, and makes it one of the clearest examples of a single school dramatically outperforming its district.

The test scores back up that ranking. On the most recent End-of-Course exams, the school's students scored 77.8% proficient in Biology, 92.0% in English II, and 92.3% in Math III — roughly 50 points higher than the district average in each subject and 19 to 27 points above the state average. The gap with same-district schools is enormous: North Edgecombe High posted 17.5% in Biology and 26.8% in English II, while SouthWest Edgecombe High posted 20.9% and 36.1%, respectively. The school outperforms both by 50 to 65 percentage points across all tested subjects. And the scores show steady improvement, with English II proficiency climbing from 55.6% three years ago to 92% today.

The school also stands out for attendance. Chronic absenteeism is just 17.3%, about half the district rate of 38.9% and below the state average. It earns strong effectiveness ratings for African American students (88th percentile), low-income students (85th percentile), and female students (80th percentile) — a notable result given that 96% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. It behaves like a small specialty academy, similar to Nash Early College High School and CITI High School in neighboring Nash County Public Schools. Keep in mind, though, that with only 75 students, a difference of a few students can move proficiency rates by several points, and the health sciences focus may attract a self-selected group. Still, for families in the Rocky Mount area, the school offers results that are exceptional in this region.
