Summary

Pink Hill Elementary is a pre-K through 5th grade school in Pink Hill, NC, a small rural community in Lenoir County, where 437 students attend and more than 99% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school, part of Lenoir County Public Schools, has slid noticeably in state rankings. Two years ago, Pink Hill earned a 4-star rating and ranked at the 71st statewide percentile. In the latest report, it has fallen to the 43rd percentile — a 2-star rating. Among nearby Lenoir County elementary schools, Pink Hill now trails Moss Hill Elementary, Banks Elementary, Northwest Elementary, and Southwood Elementary, and sits ahead of only Southeast Elementary.

Pink Hill’s most glaring academic weakness is 4th-grade math. In the latest school year, 40.3% of 4th graders were proficient in math, versus 61.4% statewide, and that grade level has stayed in the 40s for three consecutive reported years. The issue appears tied to the grade itself rather than the students: a class that earned an outstanding 87.5% proficiency score in 3rd-grade math fell to just 40.3% a year later in 4th grade. Just eight miles away, Moss Hill Elementary posted an 89.8% 4th-grade math proficiency rate while serving nearly the same population.

Other grade levels tell a more encouraging story. Fifth-grade science has exceeded the state average in most reported years, reaching 88.2% proficiency at its peak, and 5th-grade reading has also surpassed the state. Pink Hill students from low-income families have ranked among the better outcomes statewide for that subgroup, placing at the 66th percentile in the latest year. Chronic absenteeism, while improved from 36% to about 25%, still affects one in four students — a rate higher than at the district’s top-ranked schools. Given the strength of Pink Hill’s science and early-grade reading results, the recent declines appear actionable rather than inevitable.
