South Lenoir High serves roughly 721 students in grades 9–12 in the rural community of Deep Run, North Carolina, as part of Lenoir County Public Schools. The school ranks at the 32nd percentile statewide, placing it in the lower-middle tier of North Carolina high schools—but it is the highest-ranked traditional high school in its district, well ahead of North Lenoir High (15th percentile) and Kinston High (6th percentile). Only the selective Lenoir County Early College High ranks higher. Despite 99.6% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, South Lenoir’s chronic absenteeism rate (21%) is below district and state averages, and its graduation rate (88%) closely tracks the state average.

South Lenoir is the only traditional high school in Lenoir County to exceed district-wide averages in all four End-of-Course subjects. Its most impressive result is in Math III, where 72% of students scored at grade level—surpassing the state average of 68.9% and beating nearby Richlands High (63%), Spring Creek High (64%), and East Duplin High (56%). The school also shows genuine strength in special education: those students rank at the 53rd percentile statewide, well above the school’s overall ranking, suggesting strong IEP support.
