Summary

Jones Senior High School in Trenton, NC, is a combined middle/high school serving 495 students in grades 6–12 and is the only public secondary school reported for the rural Jones County Schools district. The school serves an extremely high-poverty population — roughly 99.4% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch — yet it keeps a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 14.6-to-1, meaning more staff per student than most nearby high schools.

The school's statewide ranking has fallen sharply since 2022-23, when it sat in the 65th percentile with three stars. By 2025-26, Jones Senior High School had dropped to the 19th percentile with one star. Academic results are mixed. The most distinctive bright spot is Math I: 45.8% of students scored proficient, above the state average of 42.1% and well above nearby West Craven High (16.8%), Richlands High (33.2%), and New Bern High (34.7%). Eighth-grade science was another consistent strength, exceeding the state for three consecutive years before a recent decline. However, English II proficiency (43.9%) trails the state by roughly 21 points, and Math III (42.4%) trails by about 26 points — the lowest among nearby comprehensive high schools.

The clearest red flag is the graduation rate. At 76.6%, Jones Senior High School trails the state rate of 88.8% and now has the lowest graduation rate in its local area — West Craven High is at 79.2%, New Bern High is at 81.8%, and most other nearby high schools exceed 89%. The rate has also fallen sharply from a recent peak of 95.0% in 2022-23. There are real strengths to build on: chronic absenteeism has improved dramatically, dropping from 62.8% in 2020-21 to 23.9% in 2024-25 — now below the state average. Improved attendance makes the academic declines more puzzling, and it suggests the priority should be ensuring students get the support they need to finish the high school pipeline, particularly in English II, Math III, and on-time graduation.
