Western Guilford High

Western Guilford High is a traditional, open-enrollment public high school in Greensboro, NC, serving about 1,243 students in grades 9–12 as part of Guilford County Schools. The school currently ranks in the 25th percentile statewide (496th of 662 North Carolina high schools), a significant decline from the prior year when it sat near the statewide median.

Despite the low overall ranking, the school shows genuine strengths. In most recent years, Western Guilford's graduation rate has met or exceeded state and district averages — 89.5% in 2025–26 versus 88.8% statewide — which is notable given that 99.76% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and 37.4% are chronically absent. When compared with Ben L. Smith High School, another high-poverty open-enrollment school in the same district, Western Guilford outperforms it on graduation rate (89.5% vs. 83.5%), chronic absenteeism (37.4% vs. 54.1%), and English II proficiency (53.5% vs. 39.8%).

Still, the school faces serious academic challenges. Biology proficiency has hovered near 38% for four consecutive years, about 20 points below the state average, and English II proficiency slipped from a strong 62.8% in 2024–25 back to 53.5% in 2025–26. Chronic absenteeism is a leading concern, running 13 percentage points higher than the state average, though it has improved from 41.4% to 37.4% over the past three years. The gap is stark when compared with Northwest Guilford High, a nearby school where only 20.9% of students receive subsidized lunch and chronic absenteeism is 15.0%; however, that comparison largely reflects the very different demographics of their attendance zones. Western Guilford's subgroup data also shows pockets of effectiveness — special education students ranked at the 52nd percentile statewide — alongside concerns for gifted students, who ranked at only the 23rd percentile. Volatile scores across subjects suggest one-year rankings should be interpreted with caution.
