Summary

Kiser Middle is a large public school in Greensboro, NC, serving 1,074 students in grades 6 through 8 and located in Guilford County Schools near a strikingly wide range of middle schools — from some of the county's lowest-performing to several of its best. Its most recent state ranking places Kiser at 391st out of 778 North Carolina middle schools (50th percentile, 2 stars), down from 314th the year before and well below its 2016–2017 peak in the 71st percentile. The school serves an extremely high-need population: 99.7% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, Kiser outperforms its own district in every tested subject and grade level. Reading is a real strength — 6th and 7th grade reading proficiency (56.3% and 59.1%) exceed state averages, and 8th grade reading (54.5%) is close — while 8th-grade science proficiency (66.3%) also beats district averages. Math lags the state at all three grade levels, and 8th-grade math is the biggest concern: only 45.9% of students are proficient versus 53.0% statewide. The most instructive comparison may be Kernodle Middle, just a few miles away. Kernodle serves a similarly high-poverty population yet ranks 185th statewide and posts dramatically higher scores (66.8% in 8th-grade math and 67.9% in 8th-grade reading). Lincoln Academy, another high-poverty neighbor, ranks 193rd.

Chronic absenteeism is the clearest lever for improvement. At 32.4%, Kiser's rate is far better than the 40%-plus rates at Jackson Middle and similar nearby schools but still about 14 points above Kernodle Middle's 18.4% — a gap that likely drives much of the difference in outcomes. Kiser also has genuine bright spots, including special education students who perform in the 84th percentile of their statewide subgroup. Overall, Kiser is not a failing school — it beats its district in most subjects — but it also is not yet closing the gap with the strongest high-poverty schools nearby. Families considering Kiser may want to ask how the school plans to strengthen 8th-grade math and reduce chronic absenteeism.
