Summary

Granville Academy is a small alternative school in Creedmoor, NC, serving 207 students in grades 1–12 through Granville County Schools, a district ranked in the bottom third of North Carolina school systems. As an alternative school, it exists for students who need a nontraditional setting—often after struggling with academics, behavior, attendance, or other challenges in a regular school. Nearly every student is now economically disadvantaged: 98.55% qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–25, up from about 44% two years earlier. Understanding that shift is key to interpreting test scores, because Granville Academy now serves a far higher-need population than in the recent past.

Compared with its own district, Granville Academy shows real strengths. In 2024–25, 75% of its 6th graders were proficient in both reading and math—more than 30 points above the district average—and 73.9% of 8th graders passed science, above the state's 68.6%. Its graduation rate hit 93.1%, beating the district's 85.6% and the state's 87.7%. Chronic absenteeism is still high at 33.3%, but that is better than the district's 40.9% and far better than the 88.2% rate at Phoenix Academy, making Granville Academy the stronger of the district's two alternative schools.

The most serious weaknesses appear in high school, where just 21.4% of Granville Academy students passed Math I and 34.1% passed Biology—both far below the state. Granville Academy's student-teacher ratio of 18.5 is also the highest among nearby schools (Oxford Preparatory 15.1, Vance Charter School 14.6, Henderson Collegiate 13.9, Falls Lake Academy 12.8, Phoenix Academy 8.5), which may leave less room for the individualized attention high-need students often require. Nearby charter schools generally post far higher math scores, but they are not alternative schools and do not enroll the same population. Measured against its own district, however, Granville Academy stands out for its graduation rate and for middle-grade reading and science. For parents, that mix of outcomes is neither a simple success story nor a failure.
