Summary

Walkertown Elementary is a PK–5 public school in Walkertown, NC, serving 633 students as part of Winston Salem / Forsyth County Schools. The school ranks in the 27th percentile of North Carolina elementary schools (1,086th of 1,492) and earns 1 star, with roughly 99.5% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Academically, Walkertown trails both its district and the state: a simple average of its six math and reading EOG scores puts proficiency at about 48.7%, versus roughly 56.7% for the district and 59.9% for the state. Fifth-grade science proficiency is 58.6%, compared with 63.6% for the district and 67.7% statewide.

The most striking context comes from nearby schools. Cash Elementary, just 2.9 miles away, serves a virtually identical population — 99.42% free/reduced-price lunch, 13.1 student-teacher ratio, and about $9,600 per pupil — yet Cash ranks in the 65th percentile, averages 64.3% proficiency in math and reading, and has chronic absenteeism of 22.0%. Walkertown's chronic absenteeism is 34.3%, meaning about one in three students misses significant school time. That pattern holds more broadly: high-performing nearby schools like Piney Grove Elementary (89th percentile) and Sedge Garden Elementary (83rd percentile) have absenteeism rates of just 9.8% and 16.4%, while lower-performing area schools exceed 40%. Attendance appears to be a meaningful lever for improvement.

There is encouraging recent momentum. Walkertown's state rank has risen from the 13th percentile in 2021–2022 to the 27th percentile in 2025–2026, and several EOG scores improved sharply last year — third-grade reading jumped from 30.9% to 50.0%, and fifth-grade reading rose from 34.0% to 48.2%. However, fourth-grade reading and math dipped, and the school continues to show significant subgroup gaps: girls rank much lower than boys relative to statewide peers, and special education students, English learners, and gifted students all land in the bottom quarter of their comparison groups. Given that Cash Elementary achieves far stronger results with essentially the same funding, staffing, and student population, Walkertown has a realistic local benchmark to aim for. Attendance, upper-grade math, and subgroup equity are the areas worth watching most closely.

Open Quote I have a child entering the second grade that attends Walkertown Elementary. I do not understand how this school could be rated anything other than exceptional.

I have sat in on instruction multiple times, met most if not all the staff, and toured the facility numerous times. The education, environment, and curriculum all feel top notch and i am proud for both of by children to attend and learn here. Our second child is entering kindergarten this year in Walkertown Elementary and i couldn't be happier about it. Close Quote
