North Davidson Middle is a grades 6–8 school in Lexington, North Carolina, that enrolls about 706 students and is part of Davidson County Schools. Its most recent state ranking is #244 out of 778 middle schools — the 69th percentile, earning three stars — a step back from its recent four-star run, when it ranked in the 74th to 82nd percentiles. Even so, proficiency rates remain above both the district and state averages in every grade and subject tested. Attendance is a standout strength: only 10.0 percent of students are chronically absent, compared with a state average of 24.2 percent, and that rate has improved steadily in recent years. About 45 percent of students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, North Davidson is especially strong in the upper grades. Eighth-grade science proficiency was 79.5 percent, well above the state's 68.6 percent, and eighth-grade reading also topped district and state averages. Reading scores climb steadily from sixth to eighth grade — a positive pattern. Nearby Oak Grove Middle, with a nearly identical overall ranking and similar poverty level, posts stronger sixth- and seventh-grade math, while North Davidson is ahead in eighth-grade math, reading, and science. I am an eight grade student about to go to the Davidson Early College High School. I see a problem not only limited to North Davidson Middle School, but also to other schools as well. This problem is known as the No Child Left Behind Act. Many students take advantage of this to slack off knowing that they will end up moving on to the next grade. I see many students like that in my school and it disappoints me knowing that I attend the same school as those unbehaved and uncaring slackers. North is a great school but there are just too many slacking students and I hate to say it, but some teachers too. Also, I think that it is a bad idea for North Davidson High School to be so close to the Middle School. I hope that this review will be taken seriously; and I hope that there will be a change to the No Child Left Behind Act. Close Quote
