Summary

Forest Park Elementary serves 472 students in grades K-5 in Kannapolis, NC, as a member of the Kannapolis City Schools district. More than 99% of its students come from economically disadvantaged households, making it a very high-poverty school. The school has declined steadily over the past decade, and now sits at the 14th percentile statewide with a 1-star rating out of 1,492 North Carolina elementary schools. Its student-teacher ratio of 12.7 is actually lower (smaller classes) than most nearby schools, and its spending per student is comparable to — sometimes higher than — the schools around it.

Academically, Forest Park trails state averages in nearly every grade and subject. Only about one-third of 5th graders are proficient in reading, and results in 5th-grade math and science also lag. The brighter news is in early elementary: 3rd-grade math jumped 15 points to 56.8% proficiency, and 3rd-grade reading rose to 41.9%, now even with the district average. Science is a relative bright spot at 51.8% proficiency. The broader pattern, however, is that students lose ground between 3rd and 5th grade.

The most telling comparison is Jackson Park Elementary, just 1.65 miles away. It serves a nearly identical student population in the same district, yet ranks at the 60th percentile statewide versus Forest Park's 14th. In 5th-grade math, Jackson Park posts 87.9% proficiency versus Forest Park's 43.4%, and reading is 60.6% versus 33.7%. Nearby Bostian Elementary and Charles E Boger Elementary also serve high-poverty populations yet achieve much stronger results, with chronic absenteeism about half of Forest Park's. Forest Park's own absenteeism has improved dramatically, from 34.6% to 23%, but remains above Jackson Park's 15.6%. Forest Park is not the lowest-ranked school in its cluster — Shady Brook Elementary is lower — but the wide gap with nearby schools serving similar families points to school-level practices rather than student demographics or resources as the main driver of results.
