Innovation Early College High is a small public early college high school located on the campus of East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, serving 227 students in grades 9–12 as part of Pitt County Schools. Despite nearly 99% of its students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, the school consistently ranks among the best in the state, earning a 5-star rating and ranking 38th out of 662 North Carolina high schools — the 94th percentile — for 2025–26.

Academically, the results are striking. On recent End-of-Course exams, Innovation students posted 100% proficiency in Math I, 98% in English II, and 97.8% in Math III — all far above district and state averages. Even in its weakest recent year, Math I proficiency was roughly double the statewide rate. Chronic absenteeism is also remarkably low: just 5.5% in the most recent reporting year, compared to 22.4% for the district and 31.1% statewide. The gap between Innovation and nearby traditional high schools is enormous. Junius H Rose High, located just 1.45 miles away and serving a similarly high-poverty population, posts a 49.4% Math I proficiency rate and ranks 311th, compared to Innovation’s 100% and 38th place. D H Conley High, despite a much lower poverty rate, still trails significantly in both proficiency and state ranking. Interestingly, the only school in the region that tops Innovation is PCS Early College High School — another early college model.
