Farmville Central High

Farmville Central High is a traditional comprehensive public high school serving 778 students in grades 9–12 in Farmville, North Carolina. The school belongs to Pitt County Schools and serves a deeply economically disadvantaged student body: in the most recent year, roughly 99.6% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch. Farmville Central placed 440th out of 662 North Carolina high schools in the latest statewide ranking (34th percentile, two stars), up from the 24th percentile the prior year but still below its 2021–2022 level of the 39th percentile.

Academically, math stands out as the main weakness. Only 21.4% of students scored proficient on the Math I End-of-Course exam, far below the district average of 51% and the state average of 42.1%. Among traditional comprehensive high schools in the county, that is the lowest rate — well behind D H Conley High at 65.7%, Junius H Rose High at 49.4%, South Central at 47.5%, North Pitt High at 43.0%, and Ayden-Grifton High at 41.7%. Biology results are also below expectations, with 43.4% proficient compared with 61.3% for the county and 58.5% statewide. English II, however, is a relative bright spot: 62% proficiency, matching the county average and close to the state's 64.6%, and stronger than North Pitt High (35.4%) and Ayden-Grifton High (51.1%).

Attendance and student support are the biggest systemic concerns. Chronic absenteeism ran at 29.1% in the most recent year — higher than the county's 21.7% and the state's 24.2% — though down from roughly 33% in each of the three prior years. The graduation rate of 83.6% trails the state average of 88.8% but is better than North Pitt High's 73.2%. The school also produces uneven results across student groups, ranking in the 11th percentile statewide for special education students (down sharply from the 56th percentile two years earlier) and the 26th percentile for economically disadvantaged students, while gifted students rank at the 58th percentile. Finally, the contrast between weak Math I scores and stronger Math III scores (69.6%, above the state average) suggests many students enter high school behind in foundational math, even though those who persist to later courses perform reasonably well.
