Greene Central High

Greene Central High is the traditional comprehensive high school in Snow Hill, NC, serving about 776 students in grades 9–12 as part of the Greene County Schools district. The school ranks 612th out of 662 North Carolina high schools, placing it in the bottom 8% and earning a 0-star rating. Nearly the entire student body — 99.61% — is economically disadvantaged, and per-pupil spending is about $11,712.

Academic results at Greene Central High fall far below state averages in every tested subject. Greene Central does have strengths: chronic absenteeism has dropped from 30.7% in 2021–2022 to 17.1% in 2024–2025, better than the state average of 24.2% and far better than the 38.9% rate at Kinston High. The graduation rate of 89.5% also sits right around the state average. Still, for parents, the combination of solid attendance and graduation rates with very low proficiency is a caution flag. Many students may be graduating without the college-and-career-ready skills they need, most importantly in math. With scores trending down for nearly every subgroup over the past few years, Greene Central High deserves a close look and urgent attention.
