PCS Early College High School

PCS Early College High School is a small public high school in Winterville, North Carolina—part of Pitt County Schools—serving just over 300 students in grades 9–12 and earning a 5-star rating as the #15 high school in North Carolina this year. The school stands out because 99.1% of its students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch, yet its academic results rival the best schools in the state. In statewide subgroup rankings, PCS ranks #1 in North Carolina for African American student outcomes and #8 for students from low-income families, reflecting strong results for every group it serves.

Test scores at PCS are near-universal: Biology and Math III proficiency are both above 98%, English II is 97.4%, and Math I is 95.6%. By comparison, South Central (just over a mile away) posts Math I proficiency of 47.5%, and D H Conley High—the best traditional high school nearby—posts 65.7% on the same exam.
