Summary:

Moore County Schools operates five middle schools — West Pine Middle, New Century Middle, Southern Middle, Crain's Creek Middle, and Elise Middle — all serving grades 6–8, with enrollments ranging from 192 to 717 students. The district ranks 63rd of 246 in North Carolina and carries a 4-star rating. Four of the five schools serve student bodies where more than 97% of children qualify for free/reduced-price lunch; New Century Middle, at 32%, is the lone exception.

West Pine Middle stands out as the district's top performer: a 5-star school ranked 55th in the state with roughly 79% overall EOG proficiency. That is striking because it has the highest poverty rate (99.6%), the largest average class sizes, and the lowest per-pupil spending ($8,445) of any middle school in the district. New Century Middle is the other clear leader, ranked 87th statewide with a 4-star rating and posting the district's best 8th-grade science proficiency (92.3%) and lowest chronic absenteeism (13.9%). By contrast, Elise Middle spends the most per student ($12,902) and has the smallest classes (10.4-to-1 student-teacher ratio), yet records the district's weakest overall proficiency, particularly in reading.

The result is a two-tier district. West Pine and New Century rank in the top 100 schools statewide with overall proficiency near 76–79% and chronic absenteeism around 14–15%. Southern Middle, Crain's Creek Middle, and Elise Middle occupy the second tier with 3-star ratings, ranking between 291st and 335th, posting roughly 60% overall proficiency, and showing chronic absenteeism from 22% to 31%. Encouragingly, every school in the district improved from 2024–25 to 2025–26; Crain's Creek Middle and Elise Middle made the largest jumps, gaining roughly 10 and 14 points. Science is the strongest subject at every school, but the widest gaps between the top and bottom performers appear in math and reading. Chronic absenteeism tracks those gaps closely, making it the clearest target for the district's lower-performing middle schools.
