Summary

North Jackson Elementary School is a PK–5 public school in Jackson, MS, serving 346 students as part of Jackson Public Schools, a district that ranks in the bottom 16% of districts statewide. One of the most striking facts about the school: every one of its students is eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, yet North Jackson has become one of the most improved elementary schools in the area. It currently holds a 3-star rating and ranks 121st out of 377 Mississippi elementary schools, putting it in the 68th percentile statewide.

That wasn't always the case. In 2015–2016, North Jackson ranked in the bottom 18% of the state, and as recently as 2021–2022 it was still near the bottom. By 2025–2026, it had climbed to the top third of all elementary schools in Mississippi. On the most recent MAAP assessments, North Jackson's proficiency rates far outpaced the district average—for example, 77.1% of 4th graders were proficient in ELA versus 35.7% districtwide, and 83% of 5th graders were proficient in science versus 57.7% districtwide. The school also keeps chronic absenteeism at 22.3%, below both the district average of 30.1% and the state average of 23.9%. The strongest performance comes in 4th grade and 5th grade science, while 3rd-grade math (34.8% proficient) remains below the state average, suggesting the school is gaining momentum but still has room to grow. Overall, North Jackson stands out as a high-poverty school that is beating the odds and delivering results that rival or exceed schools in higher-wealth neighboring districts.
