Summary

McWillie Elementary School, located at 4851 McWillie Circle in Jackson, MS, serves 414 students in grades PK through 5 as part of the Jackson Public Schools district. Despite serving a student population where 100% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch, McWillie Elementary School has established itself as one of the top-performing elementary schools in Mississippi.

The school's most recent ranking places it 56th out of 377 schools statewide (85th percentile, 4 stars), and in prior years it ranked even higher — 19th in 2022-2023, 34th in 2023-2024, and 25th in 2024-2025. McWillie's test scores far exceed both district and state averages. For example, 5th grade English Language Arts proficiency is 85.7% compared to 44.3% for the district and 55.8% for the state. In 5th grade math, 85.8% of students are proficient versus 32.1% for the district, and in science, 92.8% versus 57.7% for the district. This achievement is especially notable given that the district as a whole ranks in the bottom 16% of Mississippi districts.

McWillie also stands out from neighboring schools. Within a two-mile radius, Boyd Elementary School (0.9 miles away) posts 3rd grade ELA proficiency of just 16.2%, and Spann Elementary School (0.8 miles away) achieves 42.5%, while McWillie reaches 67.7%. Casey Elementary School (1.6 miles away) is the closest competitor, with 3rd grade ELA at 64.8% and math at 75.6%, but McWillie still outperforms Casey by 20 or more points in every 5th grade subject. McWillie's historical chronic absenteeism rate of just 5.2% (2017-2018) is far below the state rate of 13.1% and dramatically lower than nearby Boyd (41.7%). The student-teacher ratio of 15.5 is also more favorable than many peer schools. While test scores dipped slightly in the most recent year (e.g., 3rd grade ELA from 80% to 67.7%), the school remains a remarkable example of high achievement despite economic challenges.

Open Quote The school is extremely unsafe and the teachers and principal are unkind and yell at students. The teachers often prop open doors and leave them unlocked creating a very unsafe situation for our children. Close Quote
