Walton Elementary School is a PK–5 public school in Jackson, MS, serving 457 students in Jackson Public Schools, where every student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. Walton has climbed steadily from the bottom of Mississippi's elementary school rankings, rising from the 2nd percentile in 2020–2021 to the 34th percentile (2 stars) in 2025–2026, well above the district's 16th-percentile standing. A major factor appears to be attendance: chronic absenteeism fell from 49.1% in 2020–2021 to just 8.9% in 2023–2024, far better than the district (30.1%) and state (23.9%) averages.

Walton's 5th grade is a standout. In the latest year, 5th graders beat state averages in all three tested subjects: English (60.8% vs. 55.8%), math (60.8% vs. 49.6%), and science (74.5% vs. 71.5%). Science proficiency jumped more than 30 points in a single year. Early grades remain a challenge: 3rd-grade math is just 15.7% proficient and 4th-grade math is 23.5%, both below state and district levels. That gap between upper and lower grades is the school's clearest weakness.

Compared with nearby schools, Walton is a bright spot in a struggling district. Its attendance and 5th-grade results far exceed those of Boyd, Galloway, Johnson, and Pecan Park elementary schools, most of which remain in the bottom 5% statewide. Meanwhile, two same-district schools with identical poverty profiles show the ceiling: Barack Obama Elementary (ranked 2nd in Mississippi) and McWillie Elementary (56th) post far higher math scores. The next step for Walton is bringing its early grades up to the level of its impressive 5th grade.
